Unfinished Words In The Dark

Two whispered words kept me awake long after our argument ended. We had retreated to separate rooms when my husband slipped into the darkness beside my bed and began a sentence he could not finish. By morning, I was still replaying that moment, wondering whether the silence between us would finally break when he revealed his most private thou…

The disagreement had begun over something minor, but our sharp words followed us into separate bedrooms. In the guest room, I lay awake until I heard the door open. My husband moved toward the dresser, then paused beside me. Leaning close, he whispered, “I wish…” Nothing followed. After he left, I wondered what had stopped him. His visit did not erase the hurt, but it reminded me that neither of us had entirely turned away.

Over coffee the next morning, we began with ordinary things: errands, the weather, our plans. Eventually, he met my eyes and finished what he had started: “I wish we could talk without hurting each other.” We did not settle every disagreement at that table. Instead, we agreed to listen more carefully and speak more gently. There was still work ahead, but we were willing to do it together, without pretending the night before had never happened.
